Collins Lake 3/19/10

Collins Lake Rainbow Trout
Fished Collins 3 days in a row and the fishing was great on Friday, Good on Saturday and fair on Sunday.
Friday we got over 10 with one over 4lbs and on Saturday we got 8 with one 3+lber and 4 over 2lbs. On Sunday we only scratched out 4 with 1 going just under 3lbs…
Got fish on Trolling Flies, Cripplures, Fishen w/ Gary spinners and Rapalas…
On Sunday Paul Kneeland got one over 6 lbs on the fishsniffer boat late in the afternoon. Good to hear someone had a good day on Sunday, most the fishermen we talked to on Sunday were having a tough day…

Collins Lake 3/15/2010
Today we had a half day guide. We fished with Ryan Carlson of Grass Valley.
Got on the water at 8:30am and off at 12:30pm. We lost the first 4 we hooked up, then they started sticking. Ended up catching 7 and losing 8 with 2 going over 2 lbs, the rest were dinks. All fish under 2 lbs are returned to the lake to fatten up a bit.
Water temp was about 51-53 degrees and fish were a little deeper today (15-20 feet). Cinnamon, rust and brown colors are working well as is orange. Chartreuse is starting to catch fish also.

Collins Lake – 3/10/10
Today we fished with George and Shalai Harrison of Grass Valley. Started fishing at 10am and 5 minutes into the day we had landed the largest fish of the day, a 3 1/2lb rainbow on a Cripplure behind a Sling Blade.
We caught 6 more and lost about 4 or 5 and had atleast that many bumps. The Artic Fox Tube Fly with a Wiggle Fin behind a Seps Watermelon dodger did very well. Also the black/white(Cop Car or Mad Cow) Uncle Larrys spinner behind a Seps Chrome Pink dodger did good.
We will be back at Collins tomorrow then we will be on Oroville for a week or so.

Scott’s Flat Reservoir – 2/28/2010
Today Jaysen, My daughter Cordelia and my son Bobby and myself fished with Dan Bacher the editor of the Fishsniffer on Scott’s Flat Reservoir.
We fished from about 8:30 am till about noon and had a great time as it is always alot of fun fishing with Dan.
Well the fishing was slow. We had one bite on a Arctic Fox Trolling Fly with a sling blade dodger right off the bat as we were letting out the presentation leaving the ramp on the campground side of the lake. Then about 15 minutes later my son(Bobby) long-lined released a small trout on a Shasta Tackle Cripplure.
We headed over to the dam and had no hookups. We then trolled over towards the Cascade shores launch ramp and Bobby long-lined released another trout on a copper Uncle Larrys behind a sling blade. Then we had a double hook-up with Cordelia landing a small trout and Dan landing about a 1 1/2 to 2 lb trout. Cordys was on a Fishin w/ Garys copper spinner behind a Vances dodger and Dans came on a Cripplure.
Right after we landed the fish the wind came up and the bite shut down which is the opposite of what happens at other lakes. We usually like lots of wind when we are fishing the upper water column but not at Scott’s Flat. We fished the main body of the lake and the creek arm then called it a day.
P.S. Last week a fishermen on the lake had a 20lb+ rainbow follow his presentation to the boat and last year we heard the same thing happen to another fishermen,we have heard of some monster Ranibows in the lake but have never heard of anyone ever catching one. Jaysen and myself had the same thing happen to us back in 2002 and spent hundreds of hours trying to catch that beast over two years to no avail. You can bet we will be back at it again very soon with a fresh report of the monsters sighting.
